Then

News of Cross senior’s arrest spread throughout the city like it was carried by the wind. It was all over the news for weeks. It got so bad, Axel’s mom didn’t want him to start sophomore year, but the alpha scion insisted. If he didn’t go back they’d think he was weak.

Plus, he still had to worry about Ben.

Axel talked to the cops about his dad. Yes, he thought the man was capable of killing someone. Yes, Cross senior had been missing for a week. Yes, he thought his father killed the girl. No, he didn’t know why, but the bastard beat on him.

They had enough evidence to convict Cross senior, and the trial wasn’t one of those drawn out affairs that made national news. But it made local news all right. That was bad enough.

To the alpha scion, it felt like he lived underwater. Everything around him moved so slowly. The trial. The looks the neighbors gave them. The looks his pack mates gave him. This strange mixture of pity and fear. They felt sorry for him (having a father like that) and they feared he might turn out just as bad.

Axel might be a murderer too.

Fuck that.

Ben was the only one who didn’t act like Axel was different now, but he did give the taller wolf looks from time to time. His brow crinkled and his bright blue eyes widened. Then he’d take a deep breath like he had something to say, only nothing would come out.

“What?” Axel spat at the omega one afternoon. The taller wolf went over to Ben’s house to work on their math homework. In truth, Axel fiddled with his camera while Ben stared at him.

“Do you think it’s our fault?”

The alpha scion froze, his fingers hovering above the focus knob. “What’s our fault?” he asked, though Axel knew what Ben was talking about. What else could he be talking about?

“That girl, I mean, we knew what your dad was like for years and we never said anything and now. . . .”

Someone was dead. An innocent girl with long brown hair and clear gray eyes. She was the kind of girl straight guys found attractive. Axel saw enough pictures of her smiling face to know that. He’d seen her parents crying on TV. He’d had the same thoughts while he tried to sleep at night. If only he’d turned Cross senior into the cops sooner. If only he said something, Kelly Reynolds might not be dead.

Axel shrugged. “We didn’t know the future.” It was the same excuse he told himself everyday. If he didn’t, how could he breathe?

“I guess,” Ben muttered. “I just feel like I should’ve said something. I know how much he hurt you, and I was too scared to do anything.”

The alpha scion’s jaw clenched. “Well, no one else did anything either. Not my mom. Your parents. Daniel. Magnus. Or the rest of the fucking pack. I guess we’re all just as guilty as him!”

Axel didn’t remember standing up or gripping the camera like that.
